Byeokgolje Village Story (story on the village embracing Byeokgolje Reservoir)

Byeokgolje Village is located on the vast plain stretching to the West Sea with Myeonggeumsan Mountain extending from the Noryeong Mountain Range on the east. It is home to the oldest and largest ancient reservoir in Korea, Byeokgeolje (Historic Site No. 111). Additionally, the story of Danya, who sacrificed himself to protect Byeokgolje Reservoir has been passed down from generation to generation in the village. So the village has been performing the ‘Double Dragon Play’ to inherit Danya’s spirit.

Byeokgolje Reservoir was constructed in 330 AD, covering an irrigated area of 10,000 hectares, including Geumman Field, Jeongeup, and parts of Buan. The main water sources of Byeokgolje Reservoir were the Wonpyeongcheon River and Duweolcheon River. Byeokgolje Reservoir was made by blocking the area where these two rivers converged and storing water.

In 1925, the Byeokgolje embankment was dug in the middle by the Dongjin Irrigation Association present-day Korea Rural Community Corporation) and the reservior was transformed to the main source for the irrigation of farmland. As a result, the embankment was divided into two parts, and three of five sluice gates disappeared. The remaining two (Jangsaenggeo and Gyeongjanggeo) tell the history.
